Passive smoking & passive vaping study

Researchers in Tayside are inviting families to participate in a study designed to explore the health impacts of exposure to e-cigarette vapours compared to tobacco smoke.

Who can take part?
Families living together where one or more members smoke cigarettes or vape.

Eligibility Criteria?
To be eligible for this study, participants must be part of a family living together that includes:

  • A female aged 18 or older who does not smoke or vape.
  • At least one member who uses cigarettes or e-cigarettes.
  • A child aged between 5 and 12 years, who is regularly exposed to tobacco smoke or e-cigarette vapours.

What does participation involve?
Participating in this study will require the non-smoking or non-vaping female adult and child(ren) to attend a single confidential session lasting between 30 to 45 minutes at the Ninewells Hospital, Dundee or Abertay University, Bell Street, Dundee.

During this session, participants will have their height and weight measured. Adults will also have their blood pressure checked.

The following morning, participants will be asked to collect samples of their urine and saliva at home. These samples will be picked up by the research team later that day.
